INSTITUTO CULTURAL DOMINICO AMERICANO
CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS OF ENGLISH 2007
GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES ON ELT
The Instituto Cultural Domínico Americano, a Bi-National Center, was founded in 1947 by private citizens, in order to foster the cultural ties and the bonds of friendship between the Dominican Republic and the United States of America. Its mission is to encourage teaching in general, and more specifically the teaching of English and Spanish in various settings. This year, we celebrate sixty years of excellence in teaching.
The Language School of the ICDA has the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive EFL program in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, and its Spanish as a Second Language program is the fastest-growing Spanish program in the country.
Excellence, respect, teamwork, and open and continuous communication, as well as a spirit of service to the community – these are some of the principles on which the ICDA is based. The Language School also believes in communication, as well as respecting the unique quality of each student in the learning process. Its mission is “to provide a dynamic and interactive learning atmosphere, respecting individual needs and diversity, according to the latest research findings in the field of language teaching methodology.”
In the 1950’s, the ICDA started to give in-service training to its teachers; in the 1980’s, it began to offer what was termed “National Seminars for Second Language Teachers”. At these Seminars, local teachers were able to hear about the latest techniques and practices in ELT; the Seminars became Conferences, a time and occasion when teachers from different schools, institutes, countries, universities, compared notes. Guest speakers were always invited, but it is recently that international participants have begun to come not only as presenters, but also as attendees. The ICDA Language School takes pride that its “National Seminars” have taken on a new dimension, and are now Annual Conferences for Teachers of English, attended by Dominicans, Americans, and persons from other countries.
These two conferences are sponsored by the ICDA, the CCDA, the Public Affairs Section of the American Embassy, and by companies that publish EFL textbooks and supplementary materials.
ONE CONFERENCE OR TWO?
There will be two conferences, in the same country, but in different cities and different Bi-National Centers. That is why it is important to send the Proposal Forms and requests for materials to the Institute or Center where you will be presenting.
In each case, there be two days of plenary sessions, academic sessions, and workshops on all subjects of interest to all persons who work in Language programs, as teachers or as administrators, and at all levels.
